Simple But Delicious Meat Sauce: For Lasagna, Pasta or Zoodles

An easy way to make your own sauce, either for a quick topping to zoodles or other low carb pasta option, or plug into a lasagna recipe. It's super easy and just takes a little time for all the flavors to meld together. You can use any ground meat here- pork, turkey, beef. Just look for pasture raised or grass fed/ grass finished. The quality is important!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons avocado oil

  • 6 cloves of garlic -crushed

  • 1 sweet onion- diced

  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 1 lb ground meat of choice

  • 1 – 28 ounce can crushed tomatoes with herbs & garlic (or you can add your own oregano and/or basil to control the taste)

  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped basil (optional)

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  1. Add oil to a large deep sauté pan heated over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, sauté until translucent and aromatic.

  2. Add in your tomato paste, cooking for 1-2 minutes and mixing in well. Then, add ground meat, breaking up well and cooking until browned

  3. Add can of tomatoes and red wine if using (I've used white or vermouth too, depending on the protein and what I am using the sauce for). Cook uncovered for 3-5 minutes.

  4. Turn the heat down to medium/low, cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes.

  5. Taste test! Before adding salt and pepper, see where you stand. Does it need it? Start small and know you can always add more.

  6. Stir in the basil at the end if you're using it, and enjoy the sauce! Let me know how you used this and what tweaks you made to the recipe, I love hearing new ideas!
